The Vaccine side effects and other questions answered by a local Lambeth GP

The Wellbeing Ambassadors bring fresh queries from the community gathered through their day-to-day engagement in the Lambeth neighbourhoods, and they are answered by local GPs.

If someone is happy to have the first jab but hesitant about the second (for fear of an adverse reaction). Someone also spoke to a client who had had bad reactions to previous medication and was concerned about the vaccine - what sort of information should be given here? Or should they just speak to their GP?

All vaccine data (AZ, Pfizer, Moderna etc) concluded that you have more immunity against Covid after the 2nd dose.

No studies are around to tell us how long just one dose gives you immunity for so it is risky to assume long term protection.

Real-world data is telling us you are most likely to end up very sick or in hospital if you are unvaccinated or only had one dose.

For those who felt bad side effects after the first dose - it does not mean you will have the same side effects the second time around so don’t assume this.

Ultimately if they are still refusing - yes please do refer them to their GP to discuss further

How high are the serious risks of the covid vaccine?

An important report that came out in the last couple of weeks in the BMJ (British Medical Journal) is worth highlighting as it covers some of your points: AstraZeneca jab's link to cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), or blood clots in the brain - The study estimated that for 10 million people who received the AstraZeneca jab, there were seven additional cases, compared to 20 in people with Covid infection.

For blood clotting in a vein (venous thromboembolism), scientists estimated that there were 66 additional cases among 10 million who received the AstraZeneca jab, but 12,614 among those with the virus.

The study found that the AstraZeneca jab was associated with excess cases of thrombocytopenia, or low levels of blood-clotting platelets, with 107 additional cases per 10 million people. But the figure for those infected with the virus was 934.

The Pfizer vaccine was linked to an estimated 143 excess cases of stroke per 10 million, while Covid was linked to 1,699 excess strokes.
